About us
Kolombo was the old harbour quarter of Chania, the narrow streets around the Venetian port. The people who lived there were called Kolombites: fishermen and boatmen, sailors and workers of the quay, families who knew the sea by heart.
The Kolombites built a community of their own: a tight bond, a strong sense of pride and loyalty, and a language, Kolombitika, that belonged only to them.
It was never taught in a school or written in a book. It lived on from mouth to mouth. In Chania they say the tough guys are called Kolombites, but the word means more than toughness. It means standing by your own.
What is worth keeping travels from mouth to mouth.
My father spent his days around that harbour and spoke Kolombitika. He passed it on to me, and we still use it in our daily life, me and him. In every bottle and every jar, we carry it forward.
